One For The Pedestrians

It is wonderful that feedback from our bike rides help to make the ECPCN more safe and interesting. It's also good that NParks are responding positively.

However in the rounds, please spare a thought for all the pedestrians who also use the walkways and other pavements. There are too many cyclists who try to dominate these walkways/pavements to the danger of all pedestrians ......... It's an ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. After that what happens ....... the victims gets maimed and their families have to spend time and resources to look after them. WHAT DO THEY GET ......... at the very most ........ sorry lah .......

So I ask NParks to pay particular attention to this aspect so that every user whether he /she, young /old gets a fair shake. Do not just look after cyclists ...... other types of users exist too.

The LTA's bicycles-on-footpaths one year trial in Tampines Town is ending some time now in May or June 2008. Can you guess what'll be the resulting policy decisions that'll be born out of the trial?

Most letters in the ST Forum page have not been for the cyclists. One related that an elderly woman died a few days after a hit and run by a cyclist. There should be some legal protection for pedestrians especially the elderly. But then, that's useless without enforcement.

Still, the roadside paths are pretty safe for pedestrians. They and joggers face greater danger on the paths in parks. ANd mind you, these paths are better marked than roadside paths!

Although it's official that the Bicycles-on-footpaths trial only takes place in Tampines, I have witnessed these "pests" on footpaths all over bedok, especially near the factories along bedok south. One can also see them in the open spaces in the interchange running in all directions. Frankly I have yet to see any enforcement anywhere.
Of late I have even seen motorbikes on footpaths along Tampines near TM.

Do not get me wrong, I'm not anti-bicycles......they should be on the roads. Not on Footpaths...Footpaths mean for the feet.....not wheels...prams excluded.
